Floods inundated wide areas around the city of Bandung in West Java, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, the official news agency Antara said Friday.

Antara said four villages were swamped when heavy rains caused the Citarum River to overflow. The flood waters rose higher than 8 feet, villagers told Antara.

Waters flooded rice fields and about 6,000 houses, offices, schools and other public buildings. More than 50,000 people have been left homeless in Bandung and outlying districts, the news agency said.
