Burning Fat, Do-Si-Do

Share

Square dancing is not just fun. It is not just a chance to socialize or show off that colorful new outfit.

No, this is Southern California, so members of the Sierra Hillbillies square dance club of Santa Clarita say their hobby is also a good way to get aerobic exercise.

According to the American Health Foundation, one hour of vigorous square dancing burns 560 calories--more than tennis or bicycling--as members of the group noted at a recent get-together.

Sounds like there may soon be a “Do-Si-Do Workout” video.

Meanwhile, the Sierra Hillbillies show up regularly in a high school cafeteria to burn off calories and have a good time too.

The 240-member club also offers classes for beginners.

Information on their activities and those of other square dance clubs in the area are listed in the Chatsworth-based publication Open Squares, which can be reached at (818) 993-4648.
