Sun Microsystems Earnings Soar: The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said second-quarter earnings rose 80% because of better demand for its systems and better financial controls. Sun, a leading manufacturer of computer workstations, also said its chief financial officer, Kevin Melia, 44, will step down for personal reasons March 1. Michael Lehman, vice president and controller, will succeed Melia. Second-quarter net income reached $43.8 million, or 46 cents a share, from $24.1 million, or 23 cents, in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose 8% to $1.13 billion.
