Intel Earnings Jump: Intel Corp. said strong demand from the personal computer market sent fourth-quarter earnings up 38% over the year-ago period. Intel, the leading independent maker of microprocessors, said net income rose to $594 million, or $1.35 a share, from $429 million, or 99 cents, in the year-earlier period. Revenue jumped 28% to $2.39 billion, from $1.86 billion. The earnings were 4 cents shy of the mean estimate of $1.39 a share from 27 analysts polled by the Institutional Brokers Estimate System. Intel said the results were hurt by “heavier than usual start-up costs for chip factories in California and Ireland.”
