Career Flexibility: Time was you got out of school, went to work and stayed in the same business your entire life. People who grew up in the Great Depression wanted that kind of security, and those who changed careers were viewed as flaky and unreliable.

In fact, with all the changes going on in the workplace these days, people have to be more flexible about careers. The old days are over, and they won’t come back.

“Today, in order to do well or just survive, people must revise their ideas about careers and jobs,” writes Crane, who runs a company called Mentor Career Services.

“Those who continue to plan careers and pursue jobs based on yesterday’s realities will have a tough time succeeding.”
