The Health Ministry is moving to lift a ban on residual antibiotics and antibacterials in beef and pork, in response to demands from the United States and Europe.

In Japan, antibiotics in meats were banned in 1975 and antibacterial residues were prohibited in 1979. The bans effectively curtailed meat imports from the United States and Europe, which use the banned products in livestock.
