U.S. State Department Cautious on Vietnam Embargo: The department threw cold water on Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen’s suggestion that Washington might soon end the economic embargo against Vietnam. Bentsen said during a trip to Thailand that he was optimistic Washington might end the embargo, first imposed against North Vietnam in 1964. President Clinton is under growing pressure to lift the embargo. U.S. businesses are worried they will lose out to Japanese and other foreign competitors in what could be a lucrative market.
