Temperatures plummeted to record lows in the Upper Midwest from a new surge of arctic air. Subzero temperatures were common overnight from the Great Basin and the Rockies across the northern Plains and the Great Lakes. Lows were in the 20s and 30s below zero from the Upper Mississippi Valley to northern New England. Temperatures fell to the freezing point as far south as the Gulf Coast states, the National Weather Service said.
