The Greek Justice Ministry refused Tuesday to pardon four aging leaders of the military junta that ruled the country in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s and said they must remain in jail.

A Justice Ministry committee turned down requests by Stylianos Pattakos, George Zoitakis, Nikolaos Makarezos and Ioannis Ladas to be pardoned because of their failing health.

The four, serving life sentences, were among the leaders of a 1967 military coup and were senior ministers in the dictatorship that ruled Greece until 1974.
