DOWNEY : Schools Expected to Ban Gang-Type Attire

Share

Downey school board members are expected to vote Tuesday to outlaw baggy pants in an attempt to discourage gang activity on campus.

The Downey Unified School District board last week directed staff members to draw up a new dress code policy that bans any apparel, including oversized pants and shirts, determined by law enforcement officials to be gang-related. In the past, the district’s dress code policy has banned only symbols or signs that are believed to be gang-related, Deputy Supt. Donna Boose said.

Some Downey schools are also surveying parents to determine whether there is enough support for a policy that would require all elementary students to wear uniforms. Officials at Price Elementary School are considering a pilot project to require uniforms for all students beginning in September, Boose said.
