* Theater: Broadway theaters and the visitors they attract contribute approximately $2.3 billion to the economy of New York City, according to a study. Citing a ripple effect of spending on hotels, restaurants, stores and taxis by tourists drawn to New York primarily by Broadway, the study concludes that theater supports more than 25,000 jobs in New York City and contributes $142 million in state and local taxes. Of all economic activity generated by arts-motivated tourists, the report attributes a full 60% to the draw of Broadway. The report was prepared for the League of American Theatres and Producers by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a supplement to its study “The Arts as an Industry,” which was released in October.
