Glendale : City to Buy Lot for Housing Project

The Glendale Housing Authority has agreed to spend $240,000 to buy a 15,633-square-foot vacant lot for a proposed affordable housing project.

Authority members voted 6 to 0, with Glendale Mayor Larry Zarian abstaining, to purchase property on West Vine Street from owners Antonio I. Esteban and Jose Valdez.

“We believe that it’s a very good site for affordable housing,” said Madalyn Blake, director of community development and housing.

No timeline for beginning construction has been set.

City officials are also expected to meet with the Salvation Army this month to discuss a possible joint venture in developing the Vine Street property.

Salvation Army Capt. Floyd Bacon said Thursday that the site could be used to house people coming out of the Army’s Booth House program, which provides shelter for homeless families.

“It’s still in a proposed stage,” Bacon said. “We’re very, very excited about the prospects of it . . . and we’re looking forward to working with the city.”

City officials will use redevelopment funds to pay for the Vine Street lot.
