Frasier, a Well-Dressed Man

Share

The Series: “Frasier,” airs Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. on NBC.

*

The Setup: Newly divorced psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer, pictured) has moved off his stool at “Cheers” in Boston to Seattle, where he practices his trade on the airwaves.

*

Costume Designer: Audrey Bansmer, who also dresses the “Wings” ensemble.

*

The Look: We don’t know what a few months on the couch would reveal about his lifestyle and career changes, but Frasier has leaped into fashion’s fast lane. Bearing no resemblance to the basic suit-and-tie kind of guy he was on “Cheers,” the new Frasier conducts his life in the kind of clothes his fellow barflies would have never understood--expensive contemporary knits. Geometric-patterned vests, cardigans and long-sleeved polo shirts dominate, but drapey shirts and full-cut jackets also appear. The bottom line: loose, as in free, unattached.

*

Trivia: Frasier wears strictly single-breasted jackets, but his more neurotic and fastidious brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), wears only double-breasted ones.

Trend Watch: Frasier, like other successful, self-employed male professionals of the moment (at least in movies), fancies cashmere--buzz fiber of the ‘90s--and deep colors, such as burgundy, charcoal and teal.

*

We Could Live Without: Daphne Moon’s (Jane Leeves) sexy housekeeper look: skintight leggings, leotard tops, baby-doll dresses and granny boots--all topped off with a perky ponytail.

*

Quoted: “When we were developing the series and describing his living room . . . we decided that Frasier would know what an Eames chair is and what a Wassily chair is, and our thought was that he’d also know who Giorgio Armani is,” executive producer David Lee said.

Sources: Frasier’s knits carry such labels as Donna Karan and Carroll & Co. in Beverly Hills, and his sport jackets and suits are Giorgio Armani and Karan. Shirt labels include Hugo Boss and Calvin Klein.
