From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The judge in the federal murder trial of 11 Branch Davidians agreed to tell jurors that during their deliberations they can consider whether the defendants acted in self-defense. Lawyers for both sides met with U.S. District Judge Walter Smith in his San Antonio courtroom to argue the self-defense issue. Closing arguments are scheduled for Tuesday. Prosecutors contend the Davidians murdered four federal agents during a raid on David Koresh’s compound near Waco on Feb. 28. The 11 Davidians could face up to life in prison if convicted.
