A move in the Hawaii Legislature to impose a strict ban on firearms has generated a surge in gun sales.

Police had 68 requests, or about twice as many as usual, for firearms permits Thursday, the day after the proposed ban was approved by the Senate.

Gun retailers said their stores were filled with buyers and browsers and they expect even more business if the legislation passes the House.

The Senate approved a bill that would ban the import, sale or transfer of any handgun in Hawaii and another measure that would require the registration of all firearms. Currently, rifles and shotguns purchased in Hawaii do not have to be registered.

House Speaker Joseph Souki said the House will act on gun control but probably will approve less-restrictive measures.
