Mexican Trade Deficit Shrinks: The 1993 trade deficit dropped to $13.5 billion, 15.1% lower than a year earlier, the treasury ministry announced. The decrease in the shortfall had been expected and was mainly the result of lower growth in imports. Imports, which skyrocketed 24.3% in 1992, rose 5.2% last year. No reason was given for the import slowdown. However, the government launched a vigorous anti-dumping enforcement campaign last year, which affected an array of Chinese products and U.S. steel.
