Labor Leaders Arrested: AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland and two other labor leaders were arrested after a protest outside an Entenmann’s bakery in Miami over its use of walnuts. Kirkland, Teamsters General President Ron Carey and Bakery and Confectionery Workers union President Frank Hurt were charged with misdemeanor trespass and released. They face up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine if convicted. The unions are in a dispute with Diamond Walnut Growers, which hired replacement workers after its Teamsters employees went on strike in 1991. The unions began an international boycott of Diamond in August, 1992.
