ROODEPAN, South Africa — A supporter of President Frederik W. de Klerk’s National Party opened fire on members of the rival African National Congress at a campaign rally Wednesday, killing a woman.
The gunman emptied the magazine of his handgun into a crowd of ANC members, witnesses said.
The slain woman, 39, was in her yard next to the rally in Roodepan, a mixed-race township outside Kimberley. The gunman was arrested.
De Klerk canceled a planned appearance at the rally after being struck by a stone during an earlier campaign stop on his swing through South Africa’s Northern Cape region.
Black and mixed-race youths shouted “De Klerk go to hell” as security officials bundled him into an armored limousine and sped away from the Postdene township outside the town of Postmasburg.
De Klerk told reporters later that he was not hurt.
