LILLEHAMMER, Norway — Randy Will and Brian Shimer won the two U.S. berths in the four-man bobsled competition Saturday and Sunday as Jim Herberich was eliminated in a two-heat race-off. Shimer came from behind in the second heat to edge Herberich by two-hundredths of a second. Shimer’s 52.53 seconds on that run was the second fastest in a field of 34 sleds. Will had the field’s second-fastest run in the first heat, 52.01.
“I let out a big sigh of relief,” the veteran Shimer said of his near elimination. “I thought my time was really slow. I was having flashes all the way down. I surprised myself.”
