From Tonya and Dan to Ice Dancing Judges, Readers Are Golden

And I thought Tonya Harding would be a lead-pipe cinch to win.

I find it interesting, and sweet justice, that Mike Downey (Feb. 19) lost the chance to see Dan Jansen win the gold medal while covering the Tonya Harding story. It appears a journalist is finally the victim to his--and the industry’s--own journalistic hype.

Don’t blame Tonya for your misplaced values. It was your choice, not Tonya’s, to cover her unimportant story.

What’s the matter, Mike, not so enamored with Tonya anymore now that you’ve had a chance to meet her up close and personal?

Well, it looks like some people got their wish on Wednesday night. To quote The Times’ headlines: “Kerrigan Moves to the Top, While Harding Falters,” “Kerrigan Skates Away With the Day” and “After Harding Stumbles, Baiul, Bonaly Contend.”

No, I don’t question the scores nor will I predict the final outcome, for I have faith in the objectivity of the Olympic judges. But whatever happened to objective reporting?

Regarding the judging of Torvill and Dean’s final program:

Phooey on those judges! Torvill and Dean skated a more thrilling and difficult program than any of their competitors.

No one will remember the champions, but they will remember who came in third.

By any chance were the Olympic ice dancing judges former Menendez jurors?

Randy Harvey’s “news” report on Torvill and Dean was primarily a report on the sex lives of the Russians.

What did that have to do with the scoring?

Could a possible made-for-TV movie be called: “The Tonya Harding Story: From Lillehammer to the Li’l Slammer”?

Given his Olympic history, was I the only one who was nervous watching Dan Jansen carrying Baby Jane around the ice on his victory lap?
