Kerrigan’s family and friends in Stoneham, Mass., took in her silver-medal performance with a mixture of pride and disappointment.

“I guess I was hoping a little too hard that this would be the time. It’s disappointing. I really thought this was her turn,” said June Scarpa, manager of Stoneham Ice Arena, where Kerrigan learned to skate.

Family members listened to live radio broadcasts of Kerrigan’s performance at a relative’s home in North Reading, two towns away.

A dozen relatives and friends gathered around a radio and visualized the performance.

When it was announced that Kerrigan would take the silver, they erupted in cheers.

“We’ll take the silver,” said her aunt, Joanne Tarason. “We’d still love her even if she came back without a medal.”
