World IN BRIEF : ALGERIA : Leader of Extremist Algeria Group Slain

The leader of a Muslim extremist group who was Algeria’s most-wanted fugitive has been killed in a shootout, security forces announced. Mourad Si Ahmed, head of the Armed Islamic Group, and nine of his followers were killed in an assault on a building in Algiers, authorities said. Ahmed, who also used the name Djafar al Afghani, led the most violent of the Muslim extremist organizations that have been waging a two-year insurgency against Algeria’s military-installed government.
