BRIGHT IDEA: The historic train depot in San Juan Capistrano wanted low light wattage for its new Metrolink platform for the serenity of nearby Los Rios residents. That didn’t meet Amtrak’s brightness standard, and threatened to hold up the Metrolink plan. . . . A few days ago the problem was solved: County transportation official John Catoe pointed out that trains first arrived at the depot in 1895--without a light in sight. The city gets to keep its low glow.

IN THE WORKS: Three Orange County teams have advanced to the upcoming women’s community college state basketball tournament: Cypress, Golden West and Orange Coast. The finals run Thursday through Saturday in Suisun City near Sacramento. Says Cypress freshman forward Sara Works: “I knew from the start our team could make it; we have so much talent.” Averaging 20 points and nine rebounds a game, Works was the Most Valuable Player--along with Orange Coast’s LeAnn Kazmer--of the Orange Empire Conference.

ENGLISH LESSONS: Four Cal State Fullerton faculty members leave for Vietnam on Wednesday, to talk about English. They’ve been invited by a Hanoi-based government group to discuss exchange programs and whether the university’s televised English as a Second Language classes can be transmitted to Vietnam. . . . Says UCI’s Harry L. Norman, who will take part in the 12-day trip: “My understanding is that in Vietnam, there is a great interest in learning English.”
