School Uniforms

* Thank you for the thoughtful editorial (Feb. 22) on uniform requirements for our schools. I think there is no question that we would see an immediate benefit in attitude and safe passage to and from campus.

If the remaining question is one of costs, I have what I feel is a realistic solution. We have always let license plates be made in our prisons, so why not move in some sewing machines? Just think, former gang members making clothing to preclude their younger siblings from joining them.

There is another beneficial byproduct. We would be offering training in the clothing industry for employment after their parole. This could serve to bring back some employment we currently lose to other labor forces. So far, I have never seen a master license plate maker gain work in the private sector.
