European Union’s Unemployment Rate Rises: The jobless figure rose to 10.9% in January from a revised 10.8% in December and 10.0% a year earlier, the EU’s statistical office said. Eurostat expects unemployment to keep rising this year because economic growth will be too feeble to offset an increase in the number of job-seekers and companies further pruning back their work force. The largest increases in unemployment during the last year were in Spain (22.9% from 20.3%) and the Netherlands (10.0% from 8.0%).
