SIMI VALLEY : City Moves On With Police Station Plans
Moving ahead with plans to build a new police station, the Simi Valley City Council on Monday agreed to hire a consultant to scour the city for a suitable construction site.
The council agreed to fund a $35,000 study on the needs of the Police Department and possible locations for a new headquarters.
Mayor Greg Stratton spoke in support of the plan, the first phase of a four-year project to build a new station.
“I think this is a good start,” Stratton said. “Let’s figure out what we need and where we’re going to put it and move on.”
Two sites under consideration are undeveloped land at the city’s Civic Center at Tapo Canyon Road and Alamo Street, and the department’s current home at the corner of Cochran Street and Galena Avenue.
Damage from the Jan. 17 earthquake to the department’s existing headquarters on Cochran Street prompted city officials to accelerate plans for a new headquarters.
A report released by the city in mid-February said replacing the station could cost up to $11.3 million.
The council hopes to hire a consultant to conduct the study at its April 11 meeting.
