OC HIGH: STUDENT NEWS & VIEWS : What Did You Say?

You’re sitting in class taking a test. It’s quiet--except for the growling coming from your stomach. Don’t worry. It’s just your stomach trying to digest your food.

Even when you haven’t eaten for a while, your stomach, a big muscle, has acid in it, which helps soften food and kill bacteria. The stomach also holds enzymes and air. So when there’s no food in the stomach, all that liquid and air swishing around can make strange noises.

A lot of times, though, the noise isn’t coming from your stomach; it’s coming from your intestines. Food gets pretty noisy passing from your stomach into this passageway, so you hear growling sounds--and, unfortunately, so does everyone else.
