Harding Says She’s Choosing a Rebuilt Life Over Skating

Tonya Harding’s statement Wednesday after pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge in the attack on Nancy Kerrigan:

“I make this statement with mixed feelings.

“As you know, on Jan. 27, 1994, at the Multnomah Athletic Club, I admitted that I had let you down. I failed to come forward when upon returning from the National Figure Skating Championships, I first learned that those who claimed to be my friends might have been involved in the Kerrigan assault. Although I was confused and scared, that was a bad decision and there are no excuses for it.

“Today, I formally admitted that mistake in an agreement with the district attorney. I am committed to seeking professional help and turning my full attention to getting my personal life in order. This objective is more important than my figure skating.

“It is with deep regret that I have notified the United States Figure Skating Assn. that I am resigning and will not be competing this year in the World Figure Skating Championships in Japan. The timing of the resolution of the criminal investigation and related matters has made it impossible for me to devote the full attention to my figure skating necessary to perform at my best. Moreover, I am concerned that to skate at worlds now would detract from the attention the other athletes in that competition deserve and would not be good, generally, for the sport of figure skating.

“I apologize to the extent my decision today has disappointed my fans and supporters. More than ever, I need their understanding and support now.”
