Samuel Wesley Perry III; Psychoanalyst and AIDS Researcher

Samuel Wesley Perry III, 53, a psychoanalyst noted for his research on AIDS. Perry documented the psychological course of prolonged infection and made a record of adults who tested positive for HIV. His research led him to conclude that most patients were able to cope reasonably well over time if given proper counseling. He was a professor of psychiatry and associate chairman of research at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where he had worked since 1977. He also was an analyst at Columbia University’s Psychoanalytic Center. In Tenafly, N.J., on Tuesday of cancer.
