Second Opinion : COMMENTARY FROM OTHER MEDIA : AL-TALIB : Muslims Need to Help Shape the Community

Share
Al-Talib is a news magazine that reflects the Muslim perspective. It is published biquarterly by UCLA students.

The 21st Century brings with it a multitude of challenges. The new generation of Muslims has to find a way to mold the direction of the community to formulate comprehensive solutions.

Thus far, we have assumed a passive role: We feel that our Islamic duties have been fulfilled by attending conferences, paying our dues at extravagant fund-raisers and going to jumma prayers every week. While these may be acts of faith on our part, they are passive in the sense that they do not embody the fundamental duties of community service that forms an integral part of our faith. We foolishly believe that the construction of new mosques is a form of progress. Meanwhile, existing mosques are plagued with internal divisions and power struggles. While the youth look to our leaders for guidance, they find only confusion and dissension.

When do we begin expanding the role we, as Muslims, play in the greater community? What kind of an Islamic environment are we striving to create? What goals should our children strive for?

These questions were presented to community leaders. Among the solutions discussed were: encouraging the next generation to pursue “non-traditional” professions, setting up shelters for homeless Muslims, creating programs for Muslims in prison and those leaving prison and free clinics for the poor.

With patience, determination and vision, Muslims united under the banner of faith will succeed, inshallah.
