Big Three Narrow Quality Gap: U.S. auto makers continue to close the quality gap with Japanese companies, according to a study by the research firm J.D. Power & Associates in Agoura Hills. General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. have dramatically improved their quality in recent years and now trail their Japanese rivals just slightly, Power said. Japanese cars still have fewer problems in the first 90 days of ownership, but the gap narrows considerably when defects are compared after five years, the study said.
