BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Lasorda: Offerman Relaxed

Shortstop Jose Offerman’s solid spring continued at an accelerated pace Wednesday as he scored three runs, drove in three runs and went three for five as part of the Dodgers’ 21-hit attack in an 18-10 victory over Jim Abbott and the New York Yankees at Vero Beach, Fla.

Offerman also played his 16th spring game without an error and made a sweeping slide that avoided catcher Mike Stanley’s tag at the plate in the sixth inning.

“He really has changed,” Manager Tom Lasorda said of Offerman, who is hitting .340 this spring. “His personality has changed, his attitude is changed. I think what helped him more than anything was getting the two-year contract.”

Chan Ho Park and the Dodgers received word Tuesday from the commissioner’s office that his hesitation-kick delivery has been ruled illegal and that he will be called for a balk if he attempts the delivery again. Park, who pitched effectively without the pause Monday, said that he will have no problems after the ruling. “It really doesn’t matter to me,” Park said through interpreter Don Yi. “It’s just one of the many things that I do.” . . . Mike Piazza’s home run against Abbott in the second was his seventh of the spring, breaking Mike Marshall’s club record set in 1984. . . . Darryl Strawberry, his third, and Carlos Hernandez, his second, also homered for the Dodgers. . . . Dodger starter Orel Hershiser gave up six runs on six hits before recording an out in the first inning, but settled down and gave up only one more run during a 5 2/3-inning stint.
