The Clintons

* Thank you, Jesse Jackson, for telling it like it is on the Whitewater fuss (Column Left, March 17). Most accurate is your assessment of the “get Hillary” attitude that pervades this country. We have been appalled at the viciousness and hatred we hear from people, even when they tell “Hillary jokes.”

We finally have a First Lady who is using her brains. She is a role model to all women who wish to participate in the political process. We consider this a continuation of the suffragette movement, when women weren’t even considered intelligent enough to vote.

* In Jackson’s column encouraging the Clintons to “stand tall” amid the Whitewater controversy, he sums up the Clintons’ lack of business acumen by saying, “It’s a good thing he went into public service, because he surely wasn’t cut out for the private sector.” What an amusing but alarming commentary, and by a fellow Democrat doing his best to defend the Clintons!

* I enjoyed Ben Joravsky’s article on the Arkansas political machine which described the Rose Law Firm as the centerpiece of the Clinton fiefdom (Opinion, March 20). It is difficult to believe in 1994 that it was legal and ethical for Hillary Clinton’s law firm to do any business with the state government while her husband was the governor. The taxpayers pay a heavy price for this type of incestuous behavior, but we are apparently unable to pass the laws to prevent it.
