Seeking to improve its lagging quality standards, Chrysler Corp. on Thursday unveiled a $1.5-billion spending plan to upgrade its plants, tighten up testing and retrain its workers over the next five years.

The money, part of a previously announced $20-billion capital spending program, is aimed at improving so-called “core processes” at Chrysler’s powertrain, body stamping and assembly operations.
