Media: Two Views of New Section

Share

I am writing to you to respond to the new “magazine” section in my Thursday L.A. Times. Although you call it “new” and “exciting,” etc., it is another example where we are given less, while having it called more.

I really enjoyed reading the San Gabriel Valley section on Thursday and Sunday. You have had interesting feature stories on the area, some of which I frequently sent to my brother-in-law who recently moved to Denver and who grew up in Glendora. I enjoyed the coverage because I live in Pomona and work in Pasadena.

“Greatly disappointed” is the way I would describe myself upon seeing the new Thursday magazine. Since we no longer receive local coverage on Sundays, it has to make up for two good-size sections. The magazine format seems much more abbreviated and edited. Most of the stories do not extend beyond the first page of the story at all--the articles seem much shorter!

I really wish you would reconsider this move. Yes, we sometimes get a San Gabriel story in the Metro section, etc., but the old two days per week section was greatly superior in length and breadth of the articles.

Your new format of magazine/tabloid came again this morning. I am impressed by the way these sections make reading more attractive.

Seems to me both the news articles and the ads are more “smaller town” types that speak to me, who’s been a big-city resident for 45 years.

Thank you for the freshness.
