CAMARILLO : Youth Crisis Center Receives $960,000
Casa Pacifica, a children’s crisis center due to open in June, has received a federal grant of $960,000 to pay for medical and office equipment and furniture, Rep. Elton Gallegly said Wednesday.
The shelter, which the county has been planning for since 1990, will open in Camarillo this summer with space for 48 children. The facility eventually will house 96 children removed from their families due to severe physical or sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment or other crises.
Shelter officials said that although they have expected the grant since the fall of 1992, they are happy and relieved to hear it is finally approved.
“I am thrilled to have the money coming at this time,” said Tanya Gonzales, fund development manager for Casa Pacifica. “We’ve been on the edge of our seat waiting for it to arrive.”
The eight-building complex is being constructed on 22 acres near Camarillo State Hospital. Casa Pacifica officials have estimated construction and operating costs at $10 million, which is coming from private and government sources.
Gallegly worked with the Department of Housing and Urban Development to release the funds to the local community.
