Events Scheduled for Earth Day

TODAY:

An aluminum can sculpture contest will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cal State Northridge. Participants must assemble a sculpture with a minimum of 200 cans they have collected. The Chris Blondal Trio will perform a jazz concert at noon. Both events will take place at the Court of Community at the CSUN Student Union, 18111 Nordhoff St.

About 700 Valley students will be among 4,200 Los Angeles schoolchildren who will be at Dockweiler State Beach and Long Beach City Beach from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to kick off Earth Day for the Great Los Angeles Cleanup. Information: (213) 650-8143

The Burbank Recycling Center will present a demonstration of its recycling facilities, tour of a new learning center, and exhibits on water and electricity conservation from 2 to 6 p.m. A naturalist will show how insects and worms turn yard trimmings into soil, at 500 S. The Education Station, an educational supply store in Northridge, will announce 21 winners of a stamp-designing contest. The designs are supposed to commemorate Earth Day. Information: (818) 349-4050.

The Topanga-Las Virgenes Resource Conservation District is offering a guided environmental tour of Malibu Lagoon as part of a weeklong observation of Soil and Water Stewardship Week. Sunday:

An Earth Day celebration held by the cities of Calabasas and Malibu at Malibu Bluffs Park, Malibu Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway, will feature environmental booths, speakers and product displays. Two canyon cleanups are planned beginning at 9 a.m. The Topanga Canyon project will begin 1.8 miles north of Pacific Coast Highway on Topanga Canyon Boulevard and will target lower stream and roadside areas. FUTURE:

The South Coast Air Quality Management District is holding a community workshop on the Air Quality Management Plan on April 25 at the Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys. Participants can exchange information and learn how to get involved in improving air quality. Information: (909) 396-3213.

A Los Angeles River cleanup at Lake Balboa Park and the Sepulveda Basin is planned from 9 a.m. to noon April 30. Volunteers will also learn about the effects of storm drains on the river habitat and coastal beaches. Information: (818) 586-4700.

The Sepulveda Unitarian-Universalist Society is presenting a benefit concert for the North Valley Coalition, which is working to preserve the Sunshine Forest in the northern San Fernando Valley.
