UCLA Alumni Upset About Distribution of Rose Bowl Tickets

Share

I question UCLA Athletic Director Peter Dalis’ statement regarding the sale of 4,000 Rose Bowl tickets to Angelo Mazzone that, on Dec. 1, after adding up the prospects for ticket sales, he then realized he was well short of selling UCLA’s ticket allotment.

First, orders from season-ticket holders did not have to be mailed until after Dec. 1 so he could not have known what the demand was. Second, UCLA was doing everything possible to discourage the sale of extra tickets to season-ticket holders and alumni.

I had hoped to buy four extra tickets for Christmas gifts. Before Dec. 1, I was told by the UCLA ticket office and the Alumni Assn. that they were unavailable. The season-ticket holder application said that we were entitled to two additional tickets, if available, but I was told that even then it was unlikely that we would get them.

I was literally surrounded by Wisconsin fans at the game. Now I know why. I suspect that 4,000 tickets included many of the best seats available. I suspect the sale was set up well before Dec. 1 and UCLA alumni and supporters were robbed of the opportunity of going to the game.

I have been a UCLA football season-ticket holder for nearly 20 years. After the more recent lackluster football history at my alma mater, I was ecstatic when, this year, the Bruins finally made it back to the Rose Bowl.

Needless to say, I was dismayed when told, as were all season-ticket holders, that I would not be able to buy even a single additional ticket to the UCLA-Wisconsin Rose Bowl game.

Given that I am required to purchase membership in various support groups to even keep my seat location, I found this “extortion” policy upsetting.

Does anyone agree with the UCLA official who says there is no ethical issue involved?

It is obvious there must be an investigation to determine the legal, financial and ethical activities of the UCLA athletic administration.
