SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

San Diego Repertory Theatre will present the musical “Trafford Tanzi,” Claire Luckham’s literal battle between the sexes in a wrestling ring, “A Christmas Carol” and “Hamlet” as part of its six-play 1994-95 season at the Lyceum Stage and Space in San Diego’s Horton Plaza.

The company’s artistic director, Douglas Jacobs, will direct “Trafford Tanzi” in the 250-seat Lyceum Space, which will be converted to a theater in the round to accommodate the fight. Productions have not been assigned dates yet, but tentative scheduling for “Trafford Tanzi” is in the fall, with “A Christmas Carol” running in December (the director to be announced) and “Hamlet,” under the direction of associate artistic director Todd Salovey, in January, both on the 565-seat Lyceum Stage.

Jane Martin’s “Keely & Du,” a tale about the kidnaping of a pregnant woman from an abortion clinic by abortion opponents, is likely to end the season, Jacobs said last week. Producing director Sam Woodhouse will direct in the Space.

According to Jacobs, either Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” or Aishah Rahman’s “The Mojo and the Sayso” will be directed by UC San Diego professor Floyd Gaffney on the Lyceum Stage in the fall. To complete the season, Luis Santeiro’s “Our Lady of the Tortilla” or Octavio Solis’ “Prospect” will be staged on the Lyceum Space in the spring as the company’s annual Teatro Sin Fronteras project. The director will be announced.

The Rep will enter its 19th year with a budget of $1.78 million, including a surplus of nearly $40,000, its second consecutive surplus. It will be used to help reduce the company’s accumulated deficit of $240,000, Jacobs said.

Subscriptions will be sold in blocks of three or six plays. Information: (619) 235-8025.
