CITY COUNCIL

CULVER CITY: The City Council this week unanimously voted to reinstate funding for a Fourth of July fireworks show, after a lapse of two years.

The annual fireworks display was canceled after the 1992 Los Angeles riots led to an increased concern for public safety, city officials said. In 1993, the city did not have money in its budget for the show.

Culver City Police Chief Ted Cooke reassured the council Monday safety at the event would be ensured. The Culver City Exchange Club, a public service group that has sponsored the fireworks show on the Culver City High School athletic field since 1950, offered to donate $8,500 toward the $27,000 cost of the fireworks and insurance.
