Share

The Salesian Boys and Girls Club will honor three people for their work in East Los Angeles neighborhoods at its Award of Excellence Dinner on May 12.

Honoree Frank Villalobos is an architect who is active in Eastside issues and serves on the club’s board of directors. Sister Jennie Lechtenberg founded People United to Enrich the Neighborhood Through Education (PUENTE), which provides job training, English as a Second Language classes and computer education for families in Boyle Heights. Artist George Yepes, who grew up as a member of the club, runs a free art academy for youths, who donate their works to nonprofit organizations.

The dinner will be at the Hotel Intercontinental, 251 S. Olive St.

The event also helps spread the word about the club’s activities for local youths, said the Rev. Carmine Vairo, executive director.

The fund-raising dinner usually brings in about as much money as the annual February golf tournament, which this year netted $37,000.

Tickets are $125 each, with corporate tables available at various prices.
