Share

The City Council will conduct a study session today to determine how to distribute more than $166,000 in federal community development block grants to charities, nonprofit groups and city programs.

The grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development are intended to fund public services for low-income families and senior citizens or to prevent slums and blighted neighborhoods.

At the 3 p.m. session, the council will consider requests from 22 local groups that have asked for a combined $287,000. Among the requests: the West Grove Pony Baseball League is asking for $2,000 and the Community Services and Recreation Department is seeking $50,000 for a gang prevention education program. The Boys and Girls Club of Westminster is requesting $40,000 and the Community Services Programs Inc. is seeking $35,000 for its programs for at-risk youths.
