WEST HILLS : Jewish Centers Form Combined Day Camp

“We’re on the road to recovery,” said Selma Sladek, marketing associate of the West Valley Jewish Community Center in West Hills, which sustained extensive water damage during the Jan. 17 temblor.

While the JCC building remains closed while the interior is being repaired, all services and programs are operating at other locations.

But administrators of the JCC are worried that the public doesn’t realize the center is still functioning.

“We’re in trailers; we’re in alternate facilities. We didn’t go to sleep,” said Sladek, who is especially concerned about the JCC’s upcoming Jewish day camp.

The center cannot hold its summer camp in the temporary facilities, so it has joined with Jewish community centers in Simi Valley and the north San Fernando Valley to form a giant Camp Valley Chai, to be held at the North Valley Jewish Community Center.

Sladek hopes at least 300 to 400 youngsters will be enrolled by June 6. There is still space available. Cost for a two-week session begins at $280.

Sladek said camp organizers have pooled the best staff members and program experts of all three Jewish community centers for the summer.

Camp Valley Chai has programs for children age 5 and up. An open house will be held on May 15 at 10 a.m. at the north Valley center.
