SAN FERNANDO : Grant Sought for Oil Recycling Program

Share

San Fernando may soon begin a new program making it easier for residents to recycle dirty motor oil, city officials said.

“In our city, we find a lot of motor oil illegally disposed of in sewage drains,” said Gabrielle Sanchez, who is in charge of recycling programs for the San Fernando Public Works Department. “This program will provide curbside collection of used motor oil.”

The San Fernando City Council approved the free program last week, and the city is now seeking a $37,000 grant from the state Integrated Waste Management Board to finance it for two years. City officials have already discussed the plan with the Waste Management Board and expect to receive the grant, Sanchez said.

San Fernando has a curbside recycling program that does not include motor oil. The new program would provide all participants with a container in which to deposit dirty oil. Residents would be able to leave the filled containers by their curbs, where they would be picked up by Los Angeles city waste management workers, and replaced with clean containers.
