GM to Build Compacts in India: The auto maker announced its premiere in the world’s second-most populous country, in a $100-million joint venture with Hindustan Motors Ltd., India’s second-largest auto maker. General Motors Corp. said it will be the managing partner in the 50-50 venture, which plans to turn out 20,000 Opel Astras annually. Production of the four-door compact is to start in the third quarter of 1995 at a Hindustan Motors plant.
