BY DESIGN : The More Unglamorous, the Better?

Sometimes the best disguise is no disguise--hence the popularity of sunglasses and baseball caps, brim forward.

“Between those two accessories,” says photographer Kathy Hutchins, “you’ve covered up half the face. The hair is hidden, too.”

The third element in this equation is dull, shapeless clothing, all the better to hide a star body. Julia Roberts was recently spotted in Century City looking like any other mall girl, in a loose brown dress, big cardigan, bare legs and flats.

Think about it, says the Star’s Janet Charlton: “Some actresses are so cute they don’t dare get dolled up in their normal lives. They have to play their looks down if they want to go to the supermarket. Otherwise, men will still flirt with them, even if they don’t know who they are. That’s why sweat suits are so popular.”

At the airport, if you see a sloppily dressed person walking with a man in a suit, “take a better look,” photographer Vinnie Zuffante says. “That could be a celebrity and a chauffeur.”
