New Tennessee Law Allows Most Adults to Carry Handguns
A new state law allows most law-abiding adults to carry handguns statewide if they undergo firearms training and post a $50,000 bond.
Gov. Ned McWherter signed the bill Tuesday, saying he received more than 900 phone calls about the measure, mostly in favor of it. Tennessee sheriffs and Nashville’s chief of police have decided who may or may not carry handguns in their counties.
The law, effective Oct. 1, makes those permits good for two years and lets bearers carry their weapons in any of Tennessee’s 95 counties. It instructs sheriffs to issue permits to anyone older than 21 who undergoes firearms training and posts the bond. Background checks are required of all applicants.
