Pennsylvania State University President Joab L. Thomas said Friday that he will retire next year.

Thomas, 61, said he probably would return to his native Alabama to work on at least two books. His contract expires Aug. 31, 1995.

Thomas came to Penn State in 1990 from the biology faculty at the University of Alabama. He previously was president at Alabama and chancellor at North Carolina State University.
