A tornado carved a wide path through this central Texas city Friday, ripping off roofs, uprooting trees and damaging buildings.

Most of the city’s 4,000 residents were without electricity after the tornado appeared about noon, sweeping off the roofs of a supermarket and other buildings and knocking over the wall of a manufacturing plant.

The were no reports of major injuries, authorities said.

“There are a lot of roofs off, trees are uprooted, there’s a lot of damage,” said Donna Klaeger, executive vice president of the local Chamber of Commerce.

Tornadoes were also reported Friday in rural areas southwest and north of Austin, about 50 miles from Marble Falls.

The National Weather Service reported that torrential rains, accumulating at up to three inches an hour in some areas, fell throughout central Texas from late Thursday through Friday.
