Foreign Insurers Will Be Allowed: The government said it will permit foreign insurance companies to set up units in the country in an attempt to boost its chances of joining the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The move will also help the country become a regional business center, the finance ministry said. Taiwan now allows U.S. insurance companies to operate branch offices. Insurers from other countries are permitted to open representative offices.
